Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park is one of Rwanda’s top tourist destination, located in the Northern province of the country, less than 2 hours drive from Kanombe International Airport. Volcanoes National Park Rwanda is famous for inhabiting some of the remaining population of the endangered mountain gorillas in the world. Volcanoes National Park currently has about 10 habituated gorilla groups available for tourism purposes such as Susa, Isabukulu, Kwitonda, Amahoro, Group 13, Karisimbi, Umubano and Sabyinyo among others.
Results from 2011 gorilla census showed that, there are 880 mountain gorillas left in the whole world, and half of this population is found in the Virunga Massif shared by Uganda (Mgahinga National Park), Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park) and Democratic Republic of Congo (Virunga National Park). The rest of the population (about 440) is found in the misty jungle of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park located south western Uganda.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
This is a priority for most travelers to Volcanoes national park. The national park is a home to 10 habituated gorilla families available for trekking. The trek in search for the gorillas is led by professional park guides, accompanied by ranger guides and porters. A day starts with a briefing at the park headquarters, and the hike can take 1- 8 hours depending on how the gorillas move in their natural habitat. It is important for one to posses a gorilla permit prior going on gorilla trek.

Mountain Bisoke & Karisimbi Volcano Hiking
Hike mount Karisimbi and Mt Bisoke both of them in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda. This hike leads to the beautiful crater lake on the top of Bisoke 3711m and Karisimbi 4507 m, climbing Mt Bisoke cost $80 per personal, hike up to the top of mt Bisoke can take about 3 hours depending on one’s fitness and speed, Hiking mount Karisimbi cost $400 per person for the whole hike but if you are hiking in the big group it becomes cheaper , climbing mt Karisimbi up to the top takes 2days.
A hike to Karisimbi’s summit is not an ordinary one, but also affords sights of several bird varieties, primates like monkeys and Gorillas since the volcano lies in the primates’ park of Parc National des Volcans (Volcanoes national park). It is also known for its exotic plants in its four belts of vegetation, from the dense forest at its base to the barren volcanic core at the summit.
The mountain Bisoke adventure on othe other hand is one of the most memorable activities in Rwanda. The top of this Volcano has a spectacular crater lake. It is simply a 6 – hours hike including the 2 hours descending down to the starting point. Experienced hikers can get to the top of this mountain in a matter of 3 hours or even less and return to the base in about an hour.

Golden Monkey Tracking in Volcanoes National Park
Golden monkeys in Rwanda live in the bamboo vegetation towards the base of the volcanoes national park and habituation experience by visitors has helped them to overcome their initial shyness to accept their daily visit by researchers and tourists. Trekking golden monkeys and gorillas is a similar experience – in a small group of no more than eight people, and you can spend one hour with the monkeys once you find them. The endangered species are very active creatures, and jump from tree to tree which is really interesting and a little difficult to photograph!

Trek to the Dian Fossey Tombs, Volcanoes National Park
Trekking to the Dian Fossey Tomb is one of the most sought after safari activities carried out while visiting Volcanoes national park for a gorilla trip. The trek involves a 30 minutes drive from the park headquarters to the trail head to access the Karisoke research camp where visitors walk for 10 minutes to the park boundary.
At the site you will find the house from where Dian Fossey was mysteriously murdered in 1985 but the more peaceful is the place where she was buried just next to her favorite gorilla friend, Digit and about 20 other mountain gorillas either killed by poachers or suffered death for other reasons
